Welcome to the website of the Basel Convention !

The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal is the most comprehensive global environmental agreement on hazardous and other wastes. The Convention has 175 Parties and aims to protect human health and the environment against the adverse effects resulting from the generation, management, transboundary movements and disposal of hazardous and other wastes. The Basel Convention came into force in 1992.

This website contains documents and information used by the Parties to the Basel Convention and other stakeholders. A special section for the general public and other newcomers to the issues addressed by the Convention is also available.

 

Appointment of the new Executive Secretary: Mr. Jim Willis, a US national, took up his position as Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Basel Convention , Stockholm Convention Secretariat and UNEP-part of the Rotterdam Convention Secretariat on 18 April 2011
